Let’s Build Financial Capability in Minnesota

April is National Financial Capability Month! Exodus Lending is committed to strengthening Minnesotans’ financial capacity by eliminating their predatory debt and providing resources and tools that encourage individuals to reclaim control of their finances, without shame or blame. This month, we’re debunking common payday loan myths and sharing strategies to end payday lending in Minnesota over on our social media platforms.

Follow us on Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, or Twitter for more #FinancialCapabilityMonth content!

And let’s be clear: while financial education is important, it is not a solution to economic injustice. Yes, we should empower individuals with the knowledge and resources to make informed decisions. And yes, we all have room to grow and things to learn when it comes to personal finances. But financial hardship is not primarily due to an individual’s poor choices or lack of education. We cannot ignore the root causes of financial struggle: a history of discriminatory practices and policies and an overall lack of a social safety net that leaves many people vulnerable to exploitation by predatory lenders.

Of course, as we expand our programming and step more fully into the financial capability space, we strive to be more equitable and inclusive. Looking to join us in these efforts? Then consider attending the 2022 Midwest Asset Building Conference from June 29th to 30th in Saint Paul! We’ll be there, plus our team has been an active member of the planning committee. This year’s theme is “Imagining the Next Economy: Disrupting the Racial Wealth Divide,” in recognition of the fact that our current economy rests on racialized and gendered exploitation and extraction and how it is our responsibility to come together to disrupt the racial wealth divide and help families build prosperity.
